Phosphates are a form of nutrient that can feed algae growth in large ponds and lakes.  Here's our suggestion for reducing their influence naturally.

High phosphorus levels in ponds are problematic because one of the by-products is the rapid and excessive growth of algae.  This can cause string algae, or filamentous growth, but also planktonic algae, which creates green water.

Algaecides are commonly used to treat these issues but really you're just treating a symptom of the problem when you only treat the algae.  Reducing phosphorus and other nutrients can help a lot.
