Shooting and reviewing the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield chambered in 9mm. I was honestly a bit reluctant to acquire this pistol for quite some time. I was convinced for a long while that it was not worth the hype, that it was too expensive for what it is, that it was too heavy, too much this, not enough that, etc.  I can happily say at this point, however, that I was very, very wrong about my initial impressions of this fine CCW piece.

It is reliable, durable, comfortable to shoot, comfortable to carry, and when considering its robust construction and fine shootability, it is well worth its price. It is thin without being too thin, light without feeling flimsy, it is textured nicely, and the trigger is excellent (for a DAO striker trigger) with a moderate weight/length and a quick reset. While I have not fired the .40 S&W version of this pistol, I can say with absolute conviction that the 9mm version is not only easy-recoiling but also surprisingly easy to shoot quickly and accurately, especially given its subcompact size. And while I am still no fan of manual safeties on concealed carry weapons, at least they made the safety lever on this pistol small and flush-fitting enough that it doesn't get in the way and, given the weight/length of the trigger pull, it can be safely carried in a quality holster with the safety turned off.

Combining this with the Smith & Wesson SD9VE (or the SD40VE, if you prefer), one can have nearly all of the bases covered in terms of general concealed carry needs, as the Shield nicely fills that niche for when you can't reasonably conceal a mid-sized pistol but you don't want to step down to a lesser caliber nor a pistol that's so tiny as to be awkward in your hands or unpleasant to practice with at the range.

For comparison, here is my review on the Kel-Tec PF9:
