Bernard Meyer, MD, Head of Neurosurgery at Klinikum rechts der Isar and colleague neurosurgeon Sandro Krieg describe the future outlook of robotic surgery and show the minimally invasive placement of spinal pedicle screws with Cirq.

After mounting Cirq to the operating table and draping the system, an incision is made and a reference array attached to the patient. Curve, the surgical navigation system from Brainlab, registers the patient and the images taken intraoperatively. Cirq is then used to align the drill and subsequent K-wires to the planned trajectory. The arm system then holds them in place until the surgeon is ready to move on to the next surgical step.
