Zechariah was a priest.
Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth pleased God. They obey all God’s commandments.
Zechariah and Elizabeth had no children, and they were both very old.
One day when Zechariah was working in the Temple.
He was chosen by lot to enter the sanctuary and burn incense.
Outside a great crowd of people prayed.

While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an angel appeared to him,
Zechariah was really scared.
The angel said, “Don’t be afraid! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son. You are to name him John. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord.
Zechariah couldn’t believe what he heard.
He said, “How can I be sure this will happen? My wife and I are too old.”

The angel said, “since you didn’t believe, you will be unable to speak until the child is born.”
Everyone rejoiced at the miraculous birth.
Zechariah still couldn’t speak, so he asked for a writing tablet.
He wrote, “His name is John.”
Instantly Zechariah could speak again, and he began praising God.

Everyone was amazed at the birth.
News spread throughout the whole region.
Everyone asked, “What will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was surely upon him in a special way.
John grew up and became strong in spirit.
Zechariah and Elizabeth cared for him until he began his public ministry.
