The glucose infusion rate or GIR is the rate of infusion of glucose in the neonate, usually at 4-6 mg/kg/minute. It depends on the strength of dextrose solution (%) and the rate of infusion (ml/kg/day)-in this short video, I explain how to calculate the GIR and its importance including examples on how to calculate, and some practical tips on how to calculate GIR on babies on mixed IV and feeds, as well as on how to increase GIR of the fluid with 25 % dextrose and how to prepare the infusion of certain concentration.
