Sir Keir Starmer asked two protesters holding a banner saying “Green New Deal now” to “let me finish” as they interrupted his speech.

The Labour leader told the pair he would “speak to you after” as they accused of him of U-turning on his £28 billion green prosperity plan before being led off stage by security.

Green New Deal Rising, the climate group behind the protest at Sir Keir Starmer’s speech, said they would be forced to “escalate our tactics” leading up to the Labour conference unless the party leader meets them face to face.

Fatima Ibrahim, co-director of the campaign, told the PA news agency: “We’ll be escalating our tactics and actions from now to the conference. A core part of what we’ve asked is for Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer to meet with us.

“If we don’t hear back we’ll be forced to escalation.”
