An asphalt driveway sealant should be applied every few years for protection and to prevent deterioration.

First, clean the driveway by removing debris, weeds, moss, dirt, oil. I power washed mine. And patch cracks and holes before seal coating. Cold patch repairs need 30 days to cure before sealing.
You can use coal tar sealers – cheaper, dirtier, most resistant to oil, last longer, needs constant stirring.
Or use asphalt emulsion sealers – popular, easier to apply (latex), less protection, fades sooner.
When applying, 2 thin layers are better than one thick layer.
Pour out some sealer and work in small areas so the sealant doesn’t dry as you spread it with a brush, broom or squeegee.
Pull and push the sealer; using pressure and an angled push stroke.
If you plan for 2 coats, the 1st coat is applied vertically, and the 2nd horizontally.
If you plan on only one coat, try to move the sealant in all 4 directions.
