A sciatic nerve block is a nerve block that uses local anesthetic to achieve analgesia in the leg. It is indicated in surgeries involving the leg, ankle and foot. It can be combined with the femoral or lumbar plexus block to provide analgesia to the entire lower extremity.
The benefits include decreased pain, reduced opioid requirements and opioid-related adverse effects. Aim is to target the sciatic nerve providing analgesia to the common peroneal and tibial nerves.
For surgical nerve block multiple techniques have been described like Lines are drawn between the greater trochanter and the posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS), and the greater trochanter and the sacral hiatus or Halfway between the greater trochanter and the PSIS a perpendicular line is drawn, and the injection is placed where the perpendicular line crosses the line between the greater trochanter and the sacral hiatus
