Fusarium wilt caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense is one of the deadliest diseases of banana. A new race of the pathogen, Tropical race 4 (Foc Tr4) has become a global concern as there is no chemical solution and resistant varieties are not readily available. The disease has been severely affecting bananas in Southeast Asia during the last two decades. Recently, it was reported also in Mozambique and some countries of the Near East, causing fears of further spread. The fungus is soil-borne and once a field is infested it spreads gradually and can wipe out all plants. As the fungus remains viable in the soil for decades the disease is threatening the sustainability of banana production as well as livelihoods of producers and workers.FAO has been promoting collaboration, awareness raising and capacity building for prevention and management of the disease. A global programme to assist countries has been developed.
