Iran has a rich and diverse musical heritage that spans centuries. Traditional Iranian music is characterized by its melodic and rhythmic intricacies, often incorporating poetic and cultural themes.

Radif is the core repertoire of classical Iranian music. It consists of a collection of melodic figures, or gushehs, which serve as the basis for improvisation. Radif is typically performed on traditional instruments such as the tar, setar, and kamancheh.

Dastgah is a musical modal system in Iranian classical music. Each dastgah consists of a set of gushehs, and musicians use these modes as a framework for improvisation. There are several dastgahs, each with its own unique emotional and melodic characteristics.

Instruments: Traditional Iranian music features a variety of instruments. Some prominent ones include:

Tar: A plucked string instrument with a deep, rich sound.
Setar: A smaller, four-stringed instrument played with a pick.
Kamancheh: A spike fiddle with a round body, played with a bow.
Ney: A flute-like instrument made of reed, producing a haunting sound.
Santur: A hammered dulcimer with strings struck by small mallets.

Avaz refers to the vocal aspect of Iranian music. It involves melodic singing, often accompanied by traditional instruments. Vocalists in Iranian music are highly trained and skilled in expressing the emotional depth of the lyrics. Many traditional Iranian songs are ghazals, poetic expressions of love, mysticism, and philosophical themes. The lyrics often draw from classical Persian poetry, with renowned poets like Rumi and Hafez serving as inspiration.

Tasnif is a form of Iranian classical song that typically has a fixed structure and is often performed in a solo setting. It may be accompanied by instruments or sung a cappella.
