A South Korean research team has developed a new type of beer made from rice.

The buds of white rice and barley are roughly ground and put into water to release malt sugars.

After being boiled with hops for about an hour, the malt sugar solution is cooled off and yeast strains are added to begin fermentation.

The rice beer is completed after a ripening process along with carbon dioxide gas for about one and two months.

The mild taste and strong flavor of this rice beer make many beer drinkers love it.

[Kim Jeong-Hwa, rice beer brewer]
"They are very curious about making beer with rice.... And they are very interested in the flavors of the rice beer. There has been a great response from customers."

South Korea's beer market is estimated at about 5 trillion won and accounts for some 60 percent of the country's entire alcoholic beverages market. It keeps growing.

The newly-developed technology to brew beer from rice has stemmed from the research team's efforts to contribute to boosting rice consumption.
