Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was posthumously declared as Great Sikh of 20th Century by Sri Akal Takhat Sahib (Supreme Temporal Authority of the Sikhs). Sant Jarnail Singh Ji was 14th head of the Damdami Taksal a more than 300 years old institution of Sikhs. First had of Damdami Taksal was Baba Deep Singh (Shaheed) who was blessed as such by Tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Sant Jarnail Singh Ji met with martyrdom on 6th of June, 1984 while defending Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Akal Takhat Sahib from armed invasion by the Indian Army. He followed the precedence set by Baba Deep Singh Ji and Baba Gurbax Singh Ji (Both preceded Sant Jarnail Singh as Head of Damdami Taksal) and laid his life for a just and common cause of Sikhs.
