Learn about Murchison Falls National Park as a safari destination with some top facts from the Guide. If you are planning a safari to Uganda this video is perfect to give you an idea of what you can see in Murchison Falls National Park. This park fits well as both a part of a longer safari itinerary or can be ticked off during a short 3-days safari.

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest National Park at over 5000 square kilometres. The great river Nile goes through the park on its 3 months journey to the Mediterranean. Murchison Falls National Park gets its name from the majestic waterfall where the river Nile is pushed down the cliffs in the most aggressive powerful waterfall in the world.

The southern part of the park is covered by jungle and here it is possible to trek chimps or go birding.  But Murchison Falls National Park is primarily a top game-drive destination with savannah; we usually nickname it the “giraffe paradise of Uganda”.  From that nickname you can gather that you are quite sure to tick off giraffes during a game-drive here. The park has the greatest number of the newly described Nubian giraffe, making the Giraffe Conservation foundation busy in Northern Uganda. Some other possible sightings during a game-drive there include elephants, Uganda Kob, Cape Buffalo, hyena and the Jakson’s Hartebeest.

For most of our visitors the main target of the game-drive is to see some big cats. In Murchsion Falls Natioanl Park there are lion and leopard. In the search for big cats our guide will take you along different game-drive tracks like Victoria & Queen’s track as well as the big sausage trees and acacia trees that are great for leopard spotting. The commonwealth roundabout can as well lead to the great cats as you continue to the hippo pool.

For birders a big highlight is the Pre-historic looking Abyssinian Ground Hornbill pairs and families that can be seen there. Other top tics include the Red-necked Falcon, Falco Chicquera in the palm forest, Heuglin’s Francolin, White fronted blackchat, The dusky babblers and the Huge Denham’s bustard.

As addition to the game-drive it is popular to take an afternoon boat-cruise on the Nile to the bottom of Murchison Falls, which lets you scan the banks of the Nile for hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes and elephants enjoying the water.
