(10 Apr 1995) T/I 10:20:43 STORY: PERRY LOCATION: ALMA-ATA DATE: 5 APRIL 1995 DURATION: 1.00 Nazarbayev welcomes US Defence Secretary US Defense Secretary William Perry went to Kazakhstan on Wednesday (5/4) to discuss aid for its nuclear disarmament programme. He also raised concern over President Nursultan Nazarbayev's decision to have a referendum on extending his term to the year 2000 instead of holding presidential elections next year. On the third stop of a week-long tour of the former Soviet Union, Perry announced that the Clinton administration was taking several new steps to help Kazakhstan. Perry's main focus was Alma-Ata's nuclear disarmament. He held talks with Defence Minister Sagadst Nurmagambetov, a World War II veteran who was the highest-ranking Kazakh in the former Soviet Army, and then met President Nazarbayev. Among the new disarmament-related projects to be financed by the US government is a science and technology centre that would help find civilian work for the hundreds of scientists who formerly worked on nuclear weapons. Some six million dollars will be spent setting up the centre. SHOWS: (ALMA-ATA, KAZAKHSTAN 5/4) Perry exits plane, down gangway, shakes hands. Photographers. Perry with Kazakhstan officials.
