Volgarr is a hack n' slash platformer. The first thing you notice is that it's very unforgiving: When you get hit, first you lose your weapon and shield and then you die. It might also not be immediately obvious from the video, but you also can't control yourself in the air, so when you jump, you commit to the jump arc.

I recorded the video in two parts, but otherwise there's no cheating in any way. Actually the recordings are year and a half apart. The first part is from the summer of 2014 and back then I played it with a keyboard. The second time when I had to relearn the game, I figured I'd try a controller for giggles. I actually used two controllers, my Razer Sabertooth broke down so I switched to DualShock 3. (Razer haters, unite!)

At this point, I've played the game a pretty decent amount, so obviously I really like it. From game design point of view, it's quite brilliant. The level design is amazing and very varied. The game is totally filled with all kinds of details you can use, which I absolutely love. I try to demonstrate some of them, but here's just some examples so you know what I mean:
* The fire sword has a slightly bigger hit area, so you can hit short enemies and chests without crouching.
* Jumping resets the spear cooldown, so you can quickly throw two spears by doing spear+jump+spear.
* Not only you can jump on spears, but they also stop enemy bullets.
* The charged spear travels a bit faster and a bit further than uncharged one. It also pushes shielded enemies further too.
* Hitting an enemy while in the air pushes you in the opposite direction.
* When you climb up a rope, Volgarr puts the shield on his back, and it's not just for show, but actually blocks shots too.
* When you approach enemies from behind, they don't see you so they don't know you're coming.
* When you throw a spear at enemies with shield or similar the spear gets stuck and you can jump on top of it.
* Getting hit while having a Mjolnir power enabled resets your jump counter, so you can get into places by getting hit on purpose.
There's a lot more and they're all on purpose too. The developer has said that he loves stuff like navigation mechanics you can exploit so people can really master the game and do things like speedrunning. So, kudos.

As a bit of a perfectionist I'm never satisfied with how the run actually went, but after all kinds of problems, technical and otherwise, I'll just be happy to call it done.

Definitely try it out if it seems to at all tickle your fancy. Kuu's seal of approval. -
