Then there's "Melba", starring R&B singer Melba Moore, a CBS sitcom that premiered on January 28, 1986, but faced a tragic coincidence as it aired on the same day as the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, with CBS notably choosing not to broadcast news coverage.
The show centered around Melba Patterson (Moore), a single mother who worked as a researcher and directed New York's Manhattan Visitors Center. Juggling her career with raising her 9-year-old daughter Tracy (Jamilla Perry), assisted by her mother Rose (Barbara Meek) and lifelong friend Susan Slater (Gracie Harrison), the series delved into the challenges and humor of their lives in bustling Manhattan. Despite its promising premise, "Melba" was canceled after one episode, with the remaining five episodes airing during the summer of 1986.
