(23 Jul 2018) Candidates standing in Pakistan's parliamentary elections wrapped up their official campaigns on Monday evening.
On the final day of electioneering for Wednesday's vote, all the major political parties held public rallies in Pakistan's main cities and increased their television advertising.
Pakistan's Tahrik-e-Insaf party, or PTI, held its final rallies in the eastern city of Lahore. The party's leader, Imran Khan, urged supporters to go to the polls on Wednesday, saying "this is the time to change your fortune".
Khan, who is tipped to win the elections, faces his stiffest competition from Shahbaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).
Leaders and PML-N supporters held a rally in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, where Shahbaz's brother - jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif - has been held in jail since 13 July, when he returned from London to face a 10-year prison sentence on corruption charges.
Earlier on Monday, party representatives asked authorities to urgently move Nawaz - who has been barred from holding public office following his removal last July by the country's Supreme Court over corruption charges - to hospital, saying his health was deteriorating rapidly.
Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, or MQM, held a rally in Karachi, which is considered to be its power base.
Pakistanis will go to the polls on Wednesday to elect the 342-seat National Assembly, the law-making lower house of parliament, and the four provincial legislatures.
Pakistanis went to the polls in 2008 and elected their first civilian government in 12 years.
As voters prepare to make history by electing a third straight civilian government, rights activists, analysts and candidates say the campaign has been among its dirtiest ever, imperiling the country's wobbly transition to democratic rule.
The campaign has been rattled by violence, with candidates from several parties targeted.
