The latest HiFi reference turntable from Fluance Audio the RT-85 is even better than their original debut flagship model, the RT-81 that I reviewed a couple of years ago. I'll be doing a separate video detailing the differences between the two record players.

In the box you'll receive the dust cover, instruction manual packaged with a pair of white gloves, RCA Audio cable with 2 ground wires, A/C adapter, motor cover, a bubble level, the main turntable, and acrylic platter. Don’t forget to check the Styrofoam inserts for the dust cover hinges, cartridge, counter weight, and 45 adapter. Fluance has partnered with Ortofon, one of the leaders in styli manufacturing who's been making them for over 100 years. The model stylus included with the RT85 is the 2M Blue, with the RT84 and RT83 models pre-packaged with the 2M Red and the RT82 packaged with the Super OM 10. What's nice about the Ortofon cartridges is that they produce a flat frequency response and don't lend any additional coloration to the sound other than what's etched into the record.

Now for the platter, the RT82 and RT83 come with a metal aluminum platter while the RT84 and RT85 both include an acrylic platter. The main difference here is that the acrylic platter itself is heavier which carriers more inertia when spinning and produces a more consistent rotational speed for a warmer sound. Also helping to stabilize the rotation speed is the servo motor which uses 500 data points per second to adjust for and ensure a consistent stable speed, which reduces wow and flutter to an impressive rate of less than 0.1%. These new models do not have a built-in pre-amp like the previous RT80 and RT81 and what this does is improves the fidelity of sound by eliminating electronic components in the turntable's circuit path which could introduce noise and also gives the end-user the flexibility to customize their setup with their own choice of pre-amp.

The turn table has a glossy finish on the solid MDF wood plinth. Like the RT81 it comes in black or wood grain walnut and this is the black version. As with all of Fluance’s turntables, this one is belt driven. You'll notice on the bottom of the unit, there are three fully adjustable feet on the bottom for stabilization, two in the front and one in the back. They're also somewhat cone shape or acorn shaped which minimizes the amount of contact with the surface underneath, and have a spring loaded dampener to reduce the amount of vibration that may be coming up through those points. The turntable comes with a small bubble level to help you level the unit as well to ensure a stable, flat spin for your records.

The fully assembled turntable measures 16.5"W x 13.5”L and 5.5”H. The controls are straight-forward. At the front left hand corner is a selector dial that lets you choose your record speed, 33 1/3 or 45 revolutions per minute (RPM). On the back of the unit are the audio output hookups, ground post, auto-stop setting, and power port. When connecting to a pre-amp, one ground cable will be used between the turntable and the preamp and the second ground cable will be used between the preamp and the amplifier or powered speakers to prevent unwanted noise. If connecting to an amplifier with a phono input, you will only need one ground cable.

The RT85 has full bodied sound, rich and warm. It has a great sound stage reproduction placing the music and instrumentation accurately, with full depth. For a belt driven table, I'm really impressed with the low amount of wow and flutter, which comparable or better to some direct drive tables I've listened to. However one feature that didn’t always work great for me for the auto-stop which sometimes stopped the track too early, before the record had a chance to finish playing. When it does work, it takes about 15 seconds for the record to stop spinning. My other complaint is that the 45 adapter sometimes felt too small for the hole in the record, allow for slight misalignment, which cause distortion as the headshell moved in and out. As well, on 45s, sometimes the end of the record would have uneven speed resulting in a lot of distortion in the last 10 seconds.

Outside of those issues, I didn’t really experience any other problems related to the sound or functionality of the record player. This record player is really able to bring out the full richness and depth of the music etched on the record and although part of that experience depends on your sound system as well, the reproduction and translation of the signal is excellent in its own right. Overall, I think it’s a really beautifully designed turntable that produces amazing audiophile sound that's still affordable for a hobbyist listener.
