Mudskippers in the Sunderbans of West Bengal.
Pearse's mudskipper, is a species of mud-skipper native to marine and brackish waters along the coasts of India. This species is amphibious, dwelling in intertidal areas and reaches a length of 10 cm.
Amphibious fish are fish that are able to leave water for extended periods of time. About 11 distantly related genera of fish are considered amphibious. This suggests that many fish genera independently evolved amphibious traits, a process known as convergent evolution. These fish use a range of terrestrial locomotory modes, such as lateral undulation, tripod-like walking (using paired fins and tail), and jumping. Many of these locomotory modes incorporate multiple combinations of pectoral, pelvic and tail fin movement.
Being amphibious, they are uniquely adapted to intertidal habitats, unlike most fish in such habitats which survive the retreat of the tide by hiding under wet seaweed or in tidal pools.
Mudskippers are quite active when out of water, feeding and interacting with one another, for example to defend their territories. They are found in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, including the Indo-Pacific and the Atlantic coast of Africa.
Henry Island is an island near Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas, India. It is approximately 130 km (81 mi) from Kolkata. Henry Island is named after a European adventurer who surveyed land in the area in the late 19th Century. The area was covered in dense mangrove forest parted by numerous canals. Nobody other to pry other than the red fiddler crabs dotting the shore.
