Mercedes-Benz's origins trace back to Karl Benz's invention of the first internal combustion engine in the Benz Patent Motorwagen in 1886, funded by Bertha Benz's dowry. Concurrently, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach adapted a stagecoach with a petrol engine later that year. The Mercedes brand emerged officially in 1901 under Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG), with entrepreneur Emil Jellinek-Mercedes registering the trademark in 1902, naming it after his daughter.

Jellinek strategically marketed Mercedes cars to elite circles in Europe and beyond, including notable figures like the Rothschilds and American billionaires. The Mercedes-Benz name was globally trademarked in 1901. The merger of Benz and Daimler's companies in 1926 formed Daimler-Benz, marking the beginning of Mercedes-Benz branded vehicles.

During the Nazi era, Mercedes-Benz produced the popular 770 model, notably used by Adolf Hitler. The company shifted to military production during World War II, employing a significant number of forced laborers. Post-war, Mercedes-Benz focused on innovation and safety features, becoming a global automotive leader.

In 2019, Daimler AG restructured, creating Mercedes-Benz AG to manage car and van operations separately from Daimler Truck AG. In 2022, Mercedes-Benz made headlines by selling a rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz SLR for $142 million, establishing the Mercedes-Benz Fund.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz remains a symbol of automotive excellence, evolving from its pioneering beginnings to its current status as a renowned global brand.
