On Thursday night, Trump closed Day 4 of the Republican National Convention with a lengthy GOP acceptance speech in which he called for 'unity'. Since surviving an assassination attempt, the former president told the Republicans he was 'saved by the grace of God'. The first 28 minutes of his speech showcased a calmer, more conciliatory Trump, extending a hand to Americans, whether Democrat, Republic, black or white, Asian or Hispanic. Yet the remaining 64 minutes saw the return of his incendiary rhetoric and reiteration of his campaign goals, including mass deportation and additional carbon-intensive drilling projects. The speech was deemed a success by his followers, while detractors described it as rambling and full of lies. The Democratic re-election campaign of President Joe Biden, on the other hand, has further descended into crisis, with former US President Barack Obama reportedly calling for him to drop out of the race. DW news interviews Dr. Jennifer R. Mercieca, historian of American political rhetoric and professor at Texas A&M University.
