Dendrochronology - why are tree rings useful?

How much a tree grows in a year depends on the local conditions – like how warm it is and how much it rains. In seasonal climates, growth stops in winter and trees lay down an annual growth band. Dating of tree-rings, and interpreting information from the resulting tree-ring pattern pattern is called DENDROCHRONOLOGY. Dendrochronology can be used to figure out the age of things made of wood – dating of historical buildings is one of the oldest applications!
