What have a service and a smash in common? More than you think I guess! For coaches and players that are in charge of their own training it is extremely important to have a basic understanding of movements if you want to correct or work on different technical aspects of your game. In this video I want to show you how every shot in badminton can be structured and what kind of movements are important for those phases, no matter what shot you wanna play.

2:37 Hitting phase

--Additional Info--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Especially at the net, there are some shots, where you do not have all the 4 phases that I showed you in the video. A tight net shot for example can be played with almost no racket movement at all (as you can see at 0:40), so there is no real backswing, hitting phase and only a little follow through.

--Characteristics at the Elite level--------------------------------------------------------

When you look at the elite level, many times you will have a hard time finding a backswing of the racket when those players play from the net. In general Elite players can play different shots from a very similar and small movement so they are very deceptive. A long backswing is important to produce power, so you will also see a lot of racketmovement when topplayers hit a smash. But at the they try to minimize the backswing, to make their shots harder to read for the opponent, or they even you use the backswing to trick the opponent. Pulling the rackethead back quickly will let the opponent think, that there will come a shot with power. If you then manage it to slow down the movement and play a good net shot, you have good chances of scoring a direct winner.
