The European Union (EU) has expressed its interest in holding talks with the Election Commission (EC) headed by the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal regarding the upcoming 12th national parliamentary election.
EU Ambassador Charles Whiteley sent a letter to the CEC via email at 3pm on Wednesday, indicating its desire for a meeting scheduled for Monday.
However, the email did not specify a specific agenda for discussion.
In his email, Whiteley expressed gratitude for previous discussions regarding the upcoming election preparations. He also expressed interest in a meeting at the EC office to learn more about the current action plan of the commission for election.
The last date for filing nomination papers for the 12th national parliamentary elections has been fixed on November 30.
The EU requested a meeting on Monday, two days before the submission of nomination papers.
Several election commissioners have already started visiting different districts, and their tour schedule is until November 29. The relevant EC officials mentioned Charles Whiteley's letter in their documents. However, the EC did not make a decision on the meeting until Wednesday.
The EU has said it will send a four-member technical observer team to the elections. They have told the EC that they will not send a large-scale observer team citing the financial crisis.
