How to crochet a basket out of scrap yarn?  In this tutorial, I show you how you can create a very sturdy, medium-sized basket out of scrap yarn that you have left over from other projects.  This is great if you have a bunch of small yarn balls that are different sizes, weights, or types and don't have a project in mind for them.  This basket would be an awesome gift basket for an upcoming birthday or baby shower.  I use these baskets on my bookshelves as decorative storage.

How to Crochet a Basket from Scrap Yarn:
Crochet Hook Size: N/15
Yarn: Any (need three different strands to make this pattern).

Magic Circle (MC)
Row 1: 12 DC inside MC.
Row 2: 2 DC in each of the 12 DC from the previous row (24 total st at the end of the row). Use a scrap piece of yarn to mark your 1st st of each row so you know where your row starts should end.
Row 3: 1 DC in 1st st, 2 DC in 2nd st.  Repeat * around the row.  (36 total st at the end of the row).
Row 4: 1 DC in st 1 and st 2, 2 DC in st 3. Repeat * around the row (48 total st at the end of the row).
Row 5: 1 DC in st 1, 2, and 3, 2 DC in st 4. Repeat * around the row (60 total st at the end of the row).
Rows 6 - desired height: Place 1 SC in each st of the row.  Repeat until the basket reaches your desired height.
Finish off your basket with one of the three methods below.

Finish off your basket:
Once your basket has reached your desired height, you can finish it off by simply placing 1 SL in the next 3 st and tie off your yarn.  Tuck your tails and you are done!

Basket Handles:
If you would like to have basket handles, simply follow the pattern below:
Once the basket reaches your desired height, CH 8 (this can be done from any st in the row).  Skip the next 8 st and place 1 SC in the 9th st.  Place 1 SC in the next 21 st (22 total SC st).  CH 8 and skip the next 8 st and place 1 SC in the 9th st.  Place 1 SC in the next 21 st (22 total SC st).  You should now be back to your first 8 CH st.  Place 10 SC st around your chain stitches.  Once you reach the other side of your handle, begin placing 1 SC in each of the 22 SC st from the previous row.  When you reach your other handle, place 10 SC st around the chain stitches.  Place 1 SC in the next 3 st, then place 1 SL in the next 3 st and tie off your yarn.  Tuck the tails and make sure you tie off any loose string ends.  You have now completed your basket with handles!

Fold Over:
Make the basket taller than your desired height.  Place 3 SL st in the last 3 st of your pattern.  Tie off the yarn and hide your tails inside of the stitches.  Fold the brim of your basket over itself to give it a nice, clean edge.  You are done with your basket!
