Dr. Amalie Emmy Noether was a brilliant mathematician who made significant contributions to abstract algebra.

Born: March 23, 1882 in Erlangen, Bavaria, German Empire
Passed Away: April 14, 1935 (53 years old) in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, United States
When Noether died, Einstein wrote in the New York Times: “Noether was the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began.”

Emmy Noether proved Noether’s theorem in 1915. It states that every differentiable symmetry of the action of a physical system with conservative forces has a corresponding conservation law. The key to Noether’s theorem is the requirement that we can freely reinterpret observables as symmetry generators, and vice versa. In other words, symmetries imply conservation laws. Her theorem provides a mathematical way to determine what is conserved based on any type of symmetry or vice versa what type of symmetry you have based on the type of symmetry. Examples:

1. Translational Symmetry means linear momentum is conserved
2. Rotational Symmetry means angular momentum is conserved
3. Time Symmetry means energy is conserved
