Here is an excerpt from french docudrama "Le Grand Charles" (2002) with Bernard Farcy as Charles de Gaulle. Mixing fictionalized account of historical events and archive movies, the films aims to shed a different light on De Gaulle's political career, revealing the man behind the historical figure.
The Casablanca Conference was held at the Anfa Hotel in Casablanca, French Morocco from January 14 to 24, 1943, to plan the Allied European strategy for the next phase of World War II. In attendance were United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Also attending and representing the Free French forces were Generals Charles de Gaulle and Henri Giraud.
De Gaulle had to be forced to attend, and he met a chilly reception from Roosevelt and Churchill. The conference called for the official recognition of a joint leadership of the Free French forces by Charles de Gaulle and Henri Giraud. There was notable tension between the two men during the talks.
Both Churchill and Roosevelt initially wanted De Gaulle to recognize the veteran general Giraud as commander-in-chief of Free France, but De Gaulle refused to take a subordinate position, arguing that Giraud was compromising himself with Vichy.
The Americans would go on supporting Giraud and his 300,000 men in North Africa. For a time, Giraud seemed to have secured a much better position than De Gaulle, whose position with the allies seemed even more precarious.
