I need to find shorter games!! Or I must play faster ;) Again, this is split into convenient chunks of about one hour.

So, what is Golden Axe Warrior? If you are 30 or older you may remember the arcade game "Golden Axe". This is not an action game, it's a Zelda clone - but a good one! The story is simple: some evil appeared, there is a legendary weapon hidden somewhere and a legendary hero is said to emerge. Of course you are said hero and you start out with a short sword and chain mail. The goal is to find nine crystals in nine dungeons after which you can enter the evil Death Adder's lair, dungeon #10 which also is the location where you will find the Golden Axe.

Let's compare it to Zelda on the NES. The first thing you'll notice are the graphics. If you take a screenshot, print it and leave it in the sun for three months it will look like a screenshot from Zelda on the NES. Really, I hate the limited color palette of Nintendo's 8-bit console. There are also "towns". Or settlements. Uhm, 3 houses at most, but that's more than a cave or a hole in the ground where some old lunatic lives. However, the NPCs never have anything interesting to say anyway.

Both games suffer from one big issue: Where the hell am I supposed to go next? You can chop down trees with your axe, destroy rocks once you get the earth magic, you can cross shallow waters with the canoe or the sea with the ship. There is a lot of hidden stuff in both games. Most of your playing time you will run around aimlessly trying to figure out where the next dungeon is or where you can get upgrades for your gear or spells. Yes, spells. there is a separate meter for your magic points. That means, you will randomly find food or magic pots after you kill enemies. In dungeons, both can be really rare. In later dungeons it's best to only use magic if absolutely necessary. For example, fire magic uses 4 pots and damages all enemies on screen. That's worthless, it's like one hit with your sword on every enemy.

What is not as good? Well, the weapons. Holy crap, does your sword suck. The range is pathetic and if you are half a tile off you will miss the enemy and likely get hit yourself. The axe can hit a bit sideways too which helps in many cases, but that is the 2nd weapon you get. The next two are swords again. This is a big issue. You just can't mess around. You need to be super careful and later dungeons often require you to clear a room before the door opens. That sucks especially if enemies teleport around randomly. It's just not much fun to sit in a room for five minutes to carefully hit enemies to conserve precious health and magic. Like I mentioned, you can accidently touch enemies too easily because of your gimped range.

At least dungeons aren't as hard as in Zelda. While link is able to shoot with full health and he also got a bigger range of tools (bombs, arrows...), some dungeons are balls hard. Dungeon 6, wizards, anyone? In Golden Axe Warriors you have similar enemies, but those are nicer. Nothing that randomly teleports around will spawn with line of sight to you if you stand still. They will just pop up somewhere else and fire into empty space. This is pretty dumb, but it somewhat reduces the frustration due to your gimped range. Yea, I mentioned that again.

Else, the games are quite comparable. Dungeons in Golden Axe Warriors are fairly large and complex, though not as sophesticated as in Zelda. Also, there are not many different bosses. And as you will see in this video, projectiles and most bosses won't hit you if you stay in the door and shoot or stab from there.

Now, is it a good game or not? Yea, it is good. Not as good as Zelda for sure, but that is a hard feat to achieve. On its own it is very playable.

Do you know a game you would like to see played through in this channel? Just post a comment below and let me know! Btw, thanks for noticing and reading this description ;)
