Whirling of a shaft is its movement in a direction transverse to the axis of rotation. when shaft rotates between speed range where it's frequency of rotation equals to natural frequency of transverse oscillation causes resonance and corresponding speed called critical speed.
Critical or whirling or whipping speed is the speed at which the shaft tends to vibrate violently in transverse direction. The eccentricity of the C.G of the rotating masses from the axis of rotation of the shaft.
