Providing proper preventative maintenance to your injection mold is critical to ensure quality parts and profitable operations. Each tool should have a prescribed maintenance schedule typically based on number of shots that is performed routinely. Injection molds must be proactively maintained to ensure proper operation. The key areas necessary to maintain performance of your molds include keeping water lines clear and free of calcium or contaminants. This will impact the cooling of the part which can slow production or cause defects from uneven cooling. All moving surfaces including leader pins, slides and ejector systems must be lubricated to prevent premature wear. During production the operator should periodically inspect the surface of the plates to make sure they are free of plastic or contaminants that can interfere with the clamping of the tools. Care must be taken to review parts for flash that may show damage to the parting lines. When tools are put away for storage it is recommended to spray protective spray on the cavities to protect from rust.
