Hello and welcome to argue with yourself.

When we argue and debate, it is important that we learn to see all sides of an issue. Not only does this make us more informed, open-minded, and fair--but it often makes our own arguments stronger.

For the following task, you will argue with yourself by writing two separate paragraphs. In Paragraph one you will argue for what you truly believe. And in paragraph two you will argue with yourself and take the opposing side of an issue.

Today’s argumentative statement is this:

It’s better to be good at academics than to be good at sports.
So for paragraph one, you need to take a stand and decide whether you agree or disagree with this statement. Be specific and precise with your arguments. And be sure you give evidence and reasoning.
Then, you will need to write a second paragraph that argues against what you wrote in your first paragraph. When you counter argue--or in this case, argue with yourself--it is important that you directly address what you wrote in the first paragraph. Stay focused and don’t stray off topic. It is essential that you argue the same claims in each paragraph,
The purpose of this activity is to get you juggling ideas, and to get you to see arguments from a different perspective.
So once again, your mission is this. Write an argumentative paragraph stating whether you agree or disagree with this statement:
It’s better to be good at academics than to be good at sports.
Then write a paragraph that argues the opposing side of your original argument. Good luck.
