How "Plastic Love" sparked the revival of Japanese City Pop

The 70s and 80s were
The 70s and 80s were the decades that Japanese city pop was at its peak. The chill, retro, R&B, funk, chill music showed just how prosperous Japan was during that time. The economy was strong, real estate was booming, and life in cities such as Tokyo and Osaka was grand.
One of the big stars during this time was Mariya Takeuchi and her 1984 hit “Plastic Love.” While the song was a big hit in the 80s, it wasn’t noticed in the West at all. Until 2018 that is.
That year, the song went viral on YouTube, amassing over 20 million YouTube views and finally get an official MV in 2019. Japanese city pop was important in the development of future funk and vaporware, as well as showing Japan’s diverse and deep music. The genre has also influenced Korean music and their own city pop genre as well.
Let’s see the revival of Japanese City Pop through Mariya Takeuchi's "Plastic Love" (and other factors!)
