Foods: bean and legumes, diary, meat and fish, pork, whole grain peas, nutritional yeast, seafood, asparagus

Symptoms: fatigue, weight loss, confusion, muscle weakness, peripheral neuropathy, decreased immune system, cold hands and feet (Raynaud's), mood swings, irritability, GI discomfort, decreased appetite.

Used for: AIDS, canker sores, cataracts, cerebellar syndrome, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, cardiovascular disease, autonomic dysfunction, weakened immune system.
Helpful: neurocognitive- Alzheimer's , Parkinson's, dementia---alter glucose handling.

Decrease thiamin availability and increase demand.
1. High carbohydrate diet
2. Food chemicals
3. Obesity
4. Alcohol, tobacco, coffee and tea
5. Medications and environmental exposure

Testing: tests are available but is problematic--research article linked below.

Different forms.
1. Thiamine HCL and thiamine mononitrate(synthetic)
2. Benfotiamine(synthetic)-lipid soluble derivative of thiamin that can increase absorption and duration of thiamin. It can raise blood thiamin levels to 120-240% when compared to regular thiamin.  Decreases AGE and reduces oxidative stress.
3. TTFD- thiamine tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide(synthetic)
4. Nutritional yeast-natural

Dosage: 50 to 100 mg per day in divided doses 2-3 times per day.  Adding magnesium will enhance utilization of thiamine.
