Bruce Means takes us onto seepage slopes in the Chipola River floodplain to look for a newly named species- the Hillis's dwarf salamander. Using a combination of down-in-the-swamp-mud specimen collecting and modern genetic testing techniques, Dr. Means and his co-researchers determined that what had once been thought of as one species was a complex of about five distinct salamander species. This is part one of a three part look at Dr. Means' salamander discoveries. Go further in depth at the WFSU Ecology Blog: https://blog.wfsu.org/blog-coastal-health/?p=10437
