India halts visa services in Canada as diplomatic spat escalates

Diplomatic tensions between Canada and India reached new highs Thursday after New Delhi halted visa services in Canada — a nation it claims is a “safe haven” for terrorists.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dropped a bombshell Monday in the House of Commons when he cited “credible” intelligence that agents of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government may be linked to the killing of 45-year-old Sikh activist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Speaking in New Delhi, India's foreign ministry spokesperson said Canada needs to examine its "growing reputation as a safe haven for terrorists."

Arindam Bagchi said that India's High Commission and consulates in Canada were unable to review visa applications due to security threats, adding that the situation will be reviewed on a regular basis.
