When John F. Kennedy took the oath of office as president of the United States, he inherited a very dangerous world. The Cold War was at its height, Cuba had turned communist under Fidel Castro, and the Soviet Union was increasing its presence just under 90 miles off the coast of Florida. The failure of the CIA backed invasion reduced the image of American power in its own hemisphere, created a communist hero out of Fidel Castro, and emboldened the Soviet Union to make even greater gains into the Caribbean, especially in Cuba challenging American power which led to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
