(12 Jan 2014) South Sudanese troops on Sunday celebrated retaking the strategic city of Bentiu from rebels loyal to the country's former vice president.
The Information Ministry said on Sunday the government was now in full control of Unity State after its forces took over the capital Bentiu from forces loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar on Friday.
The oil-rich town was the scene of intense fighting between the SPLA (Sudan People's Liberation Army) and rebels allied to Machar.
In Bentiu on Sunday, scores of dead bodies lined the roadside from the airport and into town.
Houses, buildings and shops had been looted, burned or destroyed.
The insecurity in Bentiu has led to thousands of people seeking refuge at a United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) camp in the city.
The crisis in South Sudan, the youngest country in the world, started with tension after President Salva Kiir dismissed Machar and other high ranking politicians from Cabinet in July.
The tension culminated in fighting that broke out on December 15 and descended into ethnic attacks.
Kiir, who is an ethnic Dinka, accused Machar, who is an ethnic Nuer, of trying to overthrow the government.
Machar denies the accusation, and accuses the government of crushing political opponents.
Hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese have been displaced in the nearly month-long conflict.
The UN has said that more than 1,000 people are believed to have been killed.
