Wolbachia is a parasitic bacterium that is commonly found in insects, affecting up to 60% of all species. It is infamous for its unique strategies that manipulate the reproduction of its hosts. Wolbachia bacteria are ubiquitous in mature eggs, but not mature sperm. Therefore, only infected females can pass the infection on to their offspring. To maximise its own spread, the parasite selectively targets and kills male offspring.
