Over the past several years the Central New England Railroad has been slowly restoring the former New Haven Railroad Armory Branch Line from East Windsor, CT to the state line at Longmeadow, MA which is now the end of track. Initially the line was abandoned by Conrail to Broad Brook, CT around 1986 meanwhile Guilford Rail Systems operated the line from Springfield, MA south to Enfield, CT until 1990. In 1995 CNZR took control of the Armory Branch south of the Massachusetts State Line and they currently operate as far north as Scantic, CT. All crossings north of there are marked with EXEMPT signs and the tracks are out of service. Some sections of track have been replaced with concrete ties over the years. They are reject ties from Amtrak that are being repurposed for slow speed freight service. Several stockpiles of these are stashed along the line and more are going in soon in Enfield, CT where roadbed work is taking place. In addition to track replacement, crossing work and bridge work has been ongoing in 2021. Supposedly this work is being done to serve a customer on the line or to attract new business.
