This video describes Social Communication Disorder, which is also known as Pragmatic Communication Disorder. Social Communication Disorder is characterized by a deficit in the ability use verbal and nonverbal communication for a social purpose (e.g. greetings, sharing information), difficulty matching communication with the context (e.g. person, place, formality), difficulty understanding and following the rules of conversation or storytelling (e.g. rephrasing, taking turns, regulating the flow of the conversation, and deficits in understanding what is not explicitly stated (e.g. metaphors, inferences, humor, and idioms). With Social Communication Disorder, pragmatics are challenging, but mechanics are not affected. It is not unusual that Social Communication Disorder becomes confused with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder.
