►BMW used larger rear wheel bearings from the 7-series and 8-series models for the high-performance M3. Rear-wheel bearings are a wear item, so you will eventually have to replace the bearings on any BMW you own. Inside the bearing are a series of rollers and gone lubricating grease. The grease loses its lubricating properties and leaves rollers to wear against themselves through general use. Worn rollers create play in the bearing, leading to a loud whirring noise and a loose feeling in the rear end.
Replacing the bearing can be done at home with a handful of tools and patience. Northern market cars will have to fight through rust and corrosion, so ensure you have plenty of penetrant and maybe a MAP gas torch for when parts get stubborn. We've thrown together a rear wheel bearing replacement kit for the E46 M3 to make the job easier so you won't have to worry about missing parts. Also, consider replacing the hubs alongside the bearings; driving on a worn bearing can cause uneven wear on the hub, effectively ruining it.
