Treating Seizures in Dogs and Cats || Webinar Series Lecture # 3

Seizures are the most common neurological problem in dogs and cats. A seizure is an abnormal burst of electrical activity in the front part of the brain, called the cerebral cortex. In general, there are three main categories of causes of seizures. Seizures can be caused by problems outside the brain that secondarily affect the brain (such as low blood sugar, liver problem, toxicity, etc), problems inside the brain that primarily affect the brain (such as brain tumors, encephalitis, and strokes) and idiopathic epilepsy. Treating seizures in dogs and cats can be challenging. There is no one 'best' medication that will stop all seizures. Treatment involves first finding the underlying reason for the seizure. By finding and treating the underlying cause, it gives the pet the best chance of having the seizures managed.
