Maybe you've seen a fresh young coconut in the grocery store and didn't even know what it was.  They look like a white "top" with plastic wrap on them.

A fresh young coconut from Tailand actually has already had the green outer shell cut off. What is left is the spongy white covering the inner hard nut.  

The outer spongy covering needs to be cut away and the top of the coconut cracked open.  This allows you to access the delicious coconut water and soft coconut meat.
