How long can you hold your breath? 30 seconds? 1 minute? Chances are, if you are an average joe in relative good health, you can hold your breath up to 2 minutes. It may not seem like a long time, but without a deliberate intake of oxygen, these 120 seconds can seem like forever. If you thought that was long, could you wrap your head around half an hour? Because it is possible...with some intense training, of course. But even if you could channel your inner Aquaman, there’s a chance that holding your breath for that long could lead to some major brain damage. And if that’s not the case, then at least a loss of consciousness or an increase in blood pressure. But maybe you do see yourself as a deep sea diver---hey, it’s your future--and you must be wondering, is this profession made up of brain damaged people?! Interestingly, no. While depleting the human body from oxygen is never wise, there are a few tricks to how deep sea divers, even astronauts, accomplish this unnatural feat. Our very own, Brainiard, helps us to explore just how this is done as we navigate everything from WHY oxygen is important to our body in the first place to the short and long term consequences of holding your breath as a career move. Brainiacs, you don’t want to miss this one. Watch until the end of the video to see if our very own, Brainiard, will navigate this one.
