Shias have elaborate rituals and traditions of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. The running theme is moaning for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his 72 companions in the tragic battle of Karbala. He was buried, along with his 72 companions, in the battleground where he was martyred.

Here is the link to Part one of the Muharram series: Muharram for Shias or Sunnis? - Part 1
(Muharram- For Shias or Sunnis?)

For Shias, the shrine of Hussain is the second most important pilgrimage after Mecca. Shias, the zealous followers of Ali, have been living with a collective memory of the tragedy of Karbala for centuries.

The Islamic new year begins with the first day of Muharram. At the mausoleum of Imam Hussain, a spirited crowd witnesses the ceremony of replacing the red flag with a black flag. This marks the beginning of the 10 days of Muharram commemoration. The observance will reach its climax on the final and 10th day known as Ashura.

On the streets of Tehran Tent or Khemeh burning ritual takes place. It is being burnt to reenact the attack of the Yazidian army on Hussain's camp.

In the United Kingdom, Zuljanahs are being prepared for the Ashura procession. After Hussain's demise, his loyal horse Zuljanah ran to the camp to convey the tragic news to Husain's family. Then he galloped away towards the Alqama canal of river Euphrates and was never seen again

The horse has emerged as the most visible symbol of the Karbala event. Raising a Zuljanah for Muharram is considered an act of devotion and the practice is widespread in Pakistan. The horse is sacred and no one ever rides it.  It is raised with reverence, following a set of codes.

In the middle Eastern countries of Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Turkey, etc, the Ashura commemoration is also done through theatrics and role play. Moments of Hussain's beheading, the killing of baby Ali Asgher, etc are reenacted.  Thirst is the central theme of Karbala. Hence it is considered auspicious to offer water to everyone through small kiosks called Sabeel. The original tradition was to carry water in Mashak or goat-skin.

Mock funerals of martyrs are carried out on the streets of Karbala. Something similar happens in the Bada Imambada in Lucknow in India. 72 coffins for the 72 martyrs or shaheeds are carried out.
The mourning process in India is called Azadari. Firewalking or aag ka matam is also a part of azadari in Lucknow and other places. Probably this gives a feeling of walking on the burning hot desert of Arabia.

The Alam was the flag or banner with a metal crest, that served as the identity of a marching army in medieval Arabia. Hussain's Alam was carried by his half brother Gazi Abbas Alamdar. He laid his life while trying to fetch water from the river for the thirty children in the camp. Alam processions are carried out on Ashura. It is believed that a relic of the Alam is buried under Hazrat Abbas Dargah in India which was built by Nawab Asaf ud daula.  Abbas had appeared in the dream of Mirza Faqueera Beg who dug out the relic in 18th century from the Karbala battle ground.

The Palm or the Panja is another important element of Muharram. It stands for Panjatan. Then there is Bibi ka Alam in Hyderabad. Its story is very similar to that of Hazrat Abbas Dargah in Lucknow. 400 years back,  during the Qutub Shahi regime, a relic from the last rites of Bibi Fatima al Zehra, was brought from Arabia to Hyderabad. On the day of Ahsura, bibi ka alam is carried out on an elephant. This tradition was patronized by the Nizam.

Narrating the details of Karbala tragedy, singing lament songs called Marsiya, beating chest called Matam, and self-flagellation called Zanjeer Zani is the common theme amongst all Shias. Sometimes, the cursing of the first three Caliphs of Islam by Shias antagonizes the Sunnis and it causes riots.
