Only 600 L-78 Camaros were made total! How many survived and how many are Rally Sports! This one has been body off frame restored to factory condition. All were 4-speeds and this one is also a very desirable Rally Sport. The L-78 is verified right on the cowl tag. The motor appears to be original, trans and rear are correct. What does the L78 mean? It was the most potent 396, rated at 375 hp but the actual dyno tested hp was 425! It featured higher compression, bigger valves, solid lifter cam, square port heads, aluminum intake and a big Holley carb. These were running son of a guns. Today they are very desirable and collectable investment cars. The 1970 Camaro was the lowest production L78 of all. These cars were not even marketed. EXTERIOR: No rust or damage, the body is very clean and straight. It's smooth from the rockers to the roof. Repainted it's original Camaro gold color, the metal flake is laid out evenly and the clear coat is polished very glossy. Blacked out SS tail panel. It features the very desirable Rally Sport which has the extended nose, split bumpers and relocated turn signals. It also has front and rear spoilers, sport mirrors and the deluxe trim around the hood and rain gutters. All the chrome looks new. Up front the headlight bezels, lenses and grill look new. On the sides the emblems, door handles, trim on top of the doors look new. All new glass. The jambs are painted real nice, all the weather strips and window seals are new. The SS wheels are restored and have BFGoodrich tires. INTERIOR: Restored like new. Carpet was replaced, there is a Hurst shifter sticking out of the hump. The cushions are replaced front and back, new upholstery. Dash pad, instrument bezel was replaced. Gauges were restored, it has correct 6,500 redline tachometer and rebuilt clock. New glovebox liner and owner's manual.B The events Knobs heater control panel were replaced⅕ Door panels are excellent. Headliner was replaced but has some wrinkles. It has a retro stereo in the factory hole, there are factory speaker grills in back with upgraded speakers. ENGINE COMPARTMENT: It is completely restored and detailed. After my research and inspection I am convinced it is a correct 1970 396-375 hp motor, very possibly the original one to this car. The casting codes and dates are correct. The stamp on the motor appears to be original with factory broach marks. The code is CKO, assembly date is August 7th. Because of a strike and production issues the 70 Camaro wasn't built until mid February. The motors were still being built and stacked up, so it is normal to have a motor built several months before the car. The matching vin # of this car is stamped by the oil filter. It has the square port heads and factory aluminum intake. It has correct chrome valve covers with the spot weld dimples, correct deep groove pulleys, dated plug wires etc. Upgrades include headers, aluminum radiator and a new Holley carb. The correct Holley carb is restored and included. The correct water pump is also included. The trim tag on the firewall designates L78. I spent hours researching and inspecting the tag and it is my strong opinion it is original. Features include power steering and a restored power brake system with a cadmium plated booster. All the metal surfaces are smooth and painted real nicely, bottom of the hood is glossy and has new insulation. New wiring harness. TRUNK COMPARTMENT: It is clean dry metal with a neatly applied spatter paint. New reproduction rubber mat, jack assembly, wiring harness and weatherstrip. Under the trunk lid and the jamb are painted glossy. UNDERSIDE: The body was removed from the sub frame and chassis components for a complete restoration. The floor pan was replaced, all clean metal with no rust. They were resprayed in the red oxide primer just as it would have left the factory. The front end components are completely rebuilt and detailed. The ball joints, bushings, steering components were replaced. It has upgraded shocks. The sub frame and a-arms are smooth metal with a satin black finish. There's new body bushings. In back it has new springs, bushings, Koni gas shocks and it has the swaybar which is correct for an SS. My research said SS 396 cars have welded in swaybar brackets which this car has. The fuel system including the tank, straps, sending unit and fuel lines were replaced. It has a custom dual exhaust system an X-pipe The brake system has been restored- new brake lines, hoses, e-brake assembly and it has disc in front.
