Black History Month was created
Black History Month was created to honor the contributions of African Americans to the United States. Black History Month celebrates all Black people from all generations of U.S. history
Black History Month honors the enslaved people who were first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century.
An African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher named Carter G. Woodson came up with the idea of honoring a period to recognize black history in 1926.
President Gerald Ford changed the celebration to the entire month of February to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
And since 1976, Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States every single February
Since the first Black History Week which began in 1926, other countries have joined the United States in celebrating Black people and their contributions to their history and culture
Black History Month continues to create additional discussions and information regarding Black people and their contributions to the world today
