I think we all know the differences between electric kits and acoustic kits. And you may already be well aware of some of the pitfalls of practicing solely on electric drum sets. However, we’re often constrained to practicing on e kits for various reasons, and we sometimes forget the detrimental effects of practicing on artificial drums. I think that the danger of practicing on e kits goes deeper than just the rebound and feel. It ultimately comes down to hearing…and how we’re perceiving what we play. The good news is that this issue is somewhat “fixable.” There are ways to work around it, even if you HAVE to practice on a cheap electric drum set. I also show off my practice kit, demonstrating its advantages over low-end electric kits. Building a great practice kit costs less than you think…much less than a comparable electric drumset. So sit back, relax, and try not to get too offended as we enter the touchy gear subject of electric versus acoustic drums….versus practice kits!
