Comrie is recognised as the earthquake capital of the UK. The first earthquake record comes from here and in 1875 a seismographic observatory was built with a Mallet Seismograph. The Great Highland Fault lies nearby but this may not be the only cause of earth tremors in the area. In 1911 it had become dilapidated and a Cecil Carus-Wilson, an amateur geologist, travelled to The Ross from England and set about having the building restored. As the world's oldest surving such observatory is now has protection and in the 1980s modern equipment was installed.
