FENDER SILVERFACE TUBE BIAS 3 Steps Output Tube Match Tutorial
Hello, and welcome to this 3 step Guide on biasing the power amp / output tubes in vintage Fender Silverface tube amps.
3 Simple Steps: (only a Flat-headed screwdriver is required)
1. Output Tubes Matching
2. Ground Control (to Major tom)
3. Hum Balance
This process is relevant for Fender Silverface Tube amps built from 1968 when CBS added their ‘ill received modifications’ and until 1982 when the process was modified or discontinued. So models like the Bandmaster Reverb, the Super Reverb, AND the Pro Reverb which I have here today.
I picked this amp up used (1979) at Long and McQuade and I got a chance to swap out the tubes in my last video, but there was still some noise which we will take care of in this video.
This process allows you to get less amp noise and hum, AND extend the life of your power amp tubes by ensuring they share the load. So lets go ahead and adjust this amp’s output tube bias.
For this process you will need a flat-headed screwdriver and a quiet area.
Fire up your Amplifier, and let’s begin
by setting your channel and Master Volumes to their minimum.
1. At the back of the amplifier, adjust the ‘output tubes matching’ dial and listen for the position that offers that minimum amount of noise.
According to fender’s manual, this control makes it unnecessary to us matched power output tubes for optimum performance. And Ordinarily, no adjustment should be required unless the output tubes are changed.
2. Next, Position the ground switch.
Try each position to find the minimum hum condition.
You’re best Off, if you leave it OFF, unless there’s a noticeable improvement.
3. And step 3 we’re going to adjust the hum balance to further reduce the hum of the amplifier.
so Turn the master volume all the way to 11
and with nothing in the amp’s input adjust for minimum hum
And again this control will not need further adjustment unless the tubes or other components are changed ok RTFM CHECK.
